Depending on where you live there is usually a few camping stores to choose from, as well as an almost endless amount of virtual camping stores available online that can ship your camping equipment needs to you at home.
So where can I get the best deals?
Depending on where you live, chances are there are a few different camping stores in your town. One of the best ways to get the best prices is to show either at the beginning or the end of the season. If you can plan ahead for next year, try shopping at the end of the summer. Many camping stores want to throw sales events or offer large discounts in order to sell off their summer equipment and make room for winter camping or other gear. You can also usually get great deals at the beginning of the year when camping stores are trying to sell off any “last year model” equipment. Does it matter to you if it’s a 2009 sleeping bag? Me neither.
Another great place to look is your local newspaper for advertisements. Whenever there is going to be a big sale, chances are they are going to put out a couple large ads in the paper.
Going out of business sales. In these tough times the economy has taken a huge hit and has had a difficult time recovering. Many businesses are closing but that also offers huge savings to you. Check your newspaper, as your friends or family, or search online for local stores that may be going out of business. If you find on, chances are you’ll be able to get a number of items at 50% or more off.
If you’re lucky enough to have more than one camping store in your town, you can also price compare. Many stores are willing to lower their prices to match a competitor’s price rather than lose you to them. They also know there’s a good chance you’re going to buy more than one item or come back again so it’s worth their while to give you a deal. A typical price match will either be for the exact same amount as the competitor or the same price minus 5-10%.
Quite often, virtual camping stores (internet websites) can offer better selection and prices because they don’t have to carry large stock or have big overhead. Try searching online for the item you are interested in and chances are there is a website that is offering it. Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask for a deal. Many camping stores will allow you to talk them down a few per cent but don’t advertise that they will. It never hurts to ask and you’ll be surprised how often a store will lower their prices for you.
